Hunting

Black bear hunting is exceptional, whether it is spring or fall. Several bears a day a day are usually spotted. Most of the bears spotted are 5' to 5' 1/2 with an average weight of 125 lbs. to 150 lbs. Patient hunters willing to pass up those smaller bears are normally rewarded with a chance at a trophy measuring out at 6 to 6 1/2 foot. An exceptionally big bear in our area will measure 7' plus. During the spring hunts most of the bears are found on or near the beaches and during the fall hunts the bears tend to head for higher elevations. You can also combine fishing with hunting, to make a well rounded trip.
In Alaska a guide is not required for hunting black bear. Non-resident hunters must be accompanied by a licensed guide to hunt for brown bear.
Spring black bear hunts start in April and run until the end of May.
Brown bear hunts start May 10th through May 25th in even numbered years and Oct 1st through Oct 21st in odd number of years.
Kodiak deer hunts run from Oct 1 until early December.
